“For each individual, sport is a possible source for inner improvement.”

Pierre de Coubertin

At The Abbey, one of the fundamental principles of Physical Education is that we equip the students with the right tools and attitudes to be active for life.

We strongly believe by broadening the student’s knowledge in a positive environment it will enable them to discover their prefered sporting outlet.

Our highly qualified specialist PE department introduces students to a multitude of competitive and recreational sports, with the aim of finding every child a sport that they enjoy. With two and a half hours a week of curriculum time and additional lunchtime and after school clubs, we offer a wide range of activities.

Through our curriculum, we aim to develop our student’s communication, social and thinking skills in an active way. Alongside our traditional invasion games of Netball, Hockey, Football and Cricket, which we deliver on our two netball courts and Astro, we also offer Tag Rugby, Ultimate Frisbee, Lacrosse and OAA (Outdoor Adventurous Activities); allowing our students to develop their teamwork, leadership and problem-solving skills. Our Dance studio provides a space to explore creative ideas, experiment with new forms of self-expression and prepare for productions and performances. Our on-site swimming pool gives our students from Lower Prep (Year 1) upwards the opportunity to practice this important life skill. We have visiting experts who strengthen and inspire our students learning in Tennis and Skipping.

Extracurricular clubs contribute to learning and understanding for competitive matches and fun tournaments. We aim for every student to experience a fixture competitively or recreationally. Annually we enter IAPs tournaments in Netball, Hockey, Swimming and Badminton and compete with local schools in a league. Our Fun Run and Sports days are a time to celebrate our community; all students and teachers complete the run with an annual theme and students compete in Athletic events including high jump and long jump. Parents are warmly welcomed to enjoy these celebrations as both spectators and participants!
