At the Junior School, Modern Foreign Language lessons are delivered by specialist teaching staff.

Immersion into Modern Foreign Languages begins in Upper Prep, with an introduction to the Spanish language and culture. The lessons centre around cultural themes and interactive language opportunities. Themes include festivals and celebrations, Latin American countries and traditions and traditional foods. Teaching is fun and interactive and allows girls ample opportunity to put the language into practice through songs, games, mini dialogues and puppets.

German language and culture are introduced to students in Lower I. The lessons have as their basis a model from the Goethe Institut (the leading German worldwide language institution). The teaching materials are rich and varied, including songs, games, short texts and online learning programmes. For students wishing to carry on with German, there is an opportunity in the following year to attend the German club where they revisit what they have learnt in the previous year and continue to develop their language skills.

Students start their learning journey in French at the beginning of Upper I and continue in Upper II and Lower III, for the remaining three years at the Junior School. The overriding aim is to instil a love and enthusiasm for French, through the study of key topics and the appreciation of French culture. Students are well prepared for the Senior School, with a thorough grounding in key vocabulary, grammatical terms and sentence structures, as well as enabling them to experience a broader view of the French-speaking world.

In Upper I, confidence in language skills is gained through the introduction of key topic areas such as food and fashion. An inquiry into French literature and art allows students to begin exploring the works of Monet and the Impressionist painters. Throughout their learning, pupils are encouraged to give their opinions on different aspects of French culture and to extend their ideas through peer and class discussion.

In Upper II and Lower III, language skills are extended through the study of key topics such as the town, free time and travel, in addition to an inquiry into popular music and Francophonie. Research-based learning and communication continue to be embedded in lessons and students are enabled to explore and share areas of interest and aspects of culture that inspire them.
