- International Baccalaureate Diploma
The Abbey School is one of the best places in the world to take the International Baccalaureate Diploma.
We have offered the IB as one of the academic routes through our Sixth Form since 2008, and our students have achieved world-class results ever since. Last summer, for example, our average IB score of 39 points was equivalent to a conditional offer from the University of Oxford.
The IB Diploma is a two-year Sixth Form programme taken by around a quarter of our students. Our IB students sit papers in a balanced range of six subjects (including a Modern Foreign or Classical Language, a Science, English and Maths) – three at higher level and three at standard level – at the end of the two year course. The points awarded for each subject range from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest – equivalent to A* or better at A Level). Students can also be awarded up to three additional points for their combined results in Theory of Knowledge and their Extended Essay. The Diploma is only awarded to students who gain at least 24 points, subject to performance across the whole Diploma and satisfactory participation in Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).
The Diploma is highly respected as an entrance qualification by universities in the UK and overseas, as well as being positively regarded by employers at home and abroad. Our experience has shown that taking the IB prepares our students magnificently well for their further study at university, as well as giving them an awareness of other languages and cultures which is invaluable in an increasingly globalised world.
We offer a wide range of subjects and options within the IB Diploma, from which students select six in which to specialise. Further details can be found on subject pages, and by exploring the links below.
