Language was no barrier for our German students

27 September 2019

Four budding linguists from The Abbey have received prizes after entering a writing competition organised by Reading University’s German department.

The competition was based on the Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales, where our students chose to write either a new ending to “Cat and Mouse in Society” or a diary entry inspired by “The Clever Farmer’s Daughter.” The tricky part was that their entries had to be in German.

Several schools participated, including Kendrick and Queen Anne’s. The entries were submitted in July, and last week the results were confirmed as the students attended an awards presentation at the University, where they each received a certificate and a prize.

For the diary entry category, Upper VI student Charlotte (Year 13) received 3rd prize, whilst Lower V (Year 10) student Jessica was awarded 2nd prize in the ‘new ending’ category. Sixth Former Riya and LV student Christina were also praised for their entries to the competition.

Mrs Seabrook Moore, Head of German at The Abbey, said “It is an impressive skill to be able to write creatively and accurately in a foreign language.” We are very pleased to see our students putting their knowledge to the test, and even more so that it’s paying off!
