PAUSE 4 THOUGHT

Pause 4 Thought

‘None of us is as smart as all of us.’ -Ken Blanchard

This week we agreed that many of us enjoy watching programmes such as The X Factor or Strictly. These reflect the competitive world in which we live, where everyone ‘wants to be a winner’. But often we need to work as part of a team, where it is the success of the team that matters rather than individual achievement or glory.

I played the girls this short film – ‘The Dance of the Little Swans’ and we considered how the beauty and skill of the performance lies in the unity of the dancers. If any one of them had tried to prove that they could jump higher, or point their toes more than the others, then the whole effect would have been ruined.

Whilst we can take pride in our own skills and talents, we need to respect other peoples’ abilities and roles, and enable everyone to play their part in the team. We thought about the various craftsmen who are contributing to our Junior School building project and how the bricklayers, electricians, roofers and plumbers have all been essential – and needed to work in a coordinated way. We also looked to the natural world: wolves form packs and show loyalty by protecting each other; penguins huddle together to stay warm in freezing temperatures and rotate positions; ants carry heavy loads and change load-bearing roles; geese fly in a ‘V’ and swap the tiring leading position.

Have a good weekend.
