Our students have confirmed it: Physics IS fun!

By Mr Hills. 17 December 2019

Recently, a group of 22 Sixth Form Physics students were lucky enough to travel to Geneva to visit le Centre European de Recherche Nucleaire, better known as CERN. The trip was an amazing insight into Particle Physics at the world’s largest Physics experiment.

In the morning of their visit the girls visited the Antimatter Factory, where they learnt about how antiprotons are made and how their properties and uses are investigated, and the Data Centre, where all the data from the four detectors is received. After lunch with the CERN scientists, they took part in the S’Cool LAB Master Class at which they built their own Cloud Chambers, to detect cosmic rays and other charged particles, and carried out experiments with electron tubes.

On other days during the trip they had many trips across the lake and saw some beautiful architecture in the Cathedral and even climbed to the top of the tower to look over the whole city. As part of their city tour they also visited the United Nations European headquarters, Red Cross Museum and travelled across the lake to the Science Museum.

The trip started with our Youth Hostel celebrating the Genevan festival of the Escalade by offering us chocolate from a commemorative bowl made of chocolate and finished with a very enjoyable meal in a typical Swiss restaurant in the old town of Geneva. The girls will have many enjoyable and informative memories from this trip and they all agreed that Physics is fun!
