On Saturday 27 January, the U14 Netball Squad competed in the South Regional Netball Tournament at Wavell School in Farnborough. The girls won all their pool games convincingly with results as follows: Seaford College 7-3, Didcot Girls 8-3, Royal Latin 10-3, St Swithuns 12-7, Dr Challoner’s 11-6 and Ryde School 18-1. From these excellent performances the girls qualified for the semi-finals against Wellington College. The teams were well matched, but The Abbey knew they had to win this round to progress to the National Finals. The weather had deteriorated all day and was at its wettest and coldest during the final rounds. The Abbey performed incredibly well and pulled together as a team to win 11-6 and gain a place at the National Finals. In the final round The Abbey faced St Swithuns, a team whom they had beaten in the earlier rounds of the tournament. However, with several illnesses and the tired legs of players, St Swithuns took an early 2-0 lead. The girls worked hard to pull it back and often looked like they could take the lead but, in the final match St Swithuns performed better in the conditions and won 5-8.
The Abbey will see St Swithuns in the Schools National Finals in Welwyn Garden City on 17 March where they will compete to be National Champions. What a great achievement!Back to newsroom
