As part of a broader Partnership Programme, girls at the Junior School joined pupils from Grazeley Primary School, Shinfield St Mary’s and Whitley Park Primary and Nursery School to watch ‘Rufus Longbottom and the Space Rabbit’ at South Street Arts Centre.
Directed by Abbey alumna Sabina Netherclift (co-founder of Filament Theatre) the story follows the journey of Space Rabbit, who lives with her family in space watching out for dangers in the universe. One day a meteor destroys her planet, separating her from her family and sending her hurtling down to earth. Having landed outside a care home, frightened and alone, she forms a friendship with Rufus Longbottom, an old gentleman itching for one last adventure. Guided by her magical paws, the unlikely pair go on a journey by bus and boat which takes them to the ends of the earth in the search for a family and a place to call home.
Inspired by the writings and creations of KS2 children from schools in east London, Derbyshire and Oxfordshire, the show proved hugely powerful and moving, touching on themes of loneliness, isolation, friendship and the ‘home’, all cleverly conveyed through exquisite singing and dynamic physical theatre.
After the play, girls from The Abbey enjoyed a Q&A session with the cast and Sabina and heard all about how the play was conceived and how the cast members had got into acting. It was a fantastic trip out and a wonderful opportunity to come together with our partner school in shared enjoyment.Back to newsroom
