It's blooming good news for Georgina

15 October 2019

Upper VI student, Georgina, took part in the Royal Society of Biology’s Nancy Rothwell Awards, where she beat more than 500 other artists from across the globe to receive a High Commended Award in the 15-18 category.

The Nancy Rothwell Award celebrates artwork that captures the intricacies of anatomy. The competition featured technical drawings of all aspects of the animal and plant kingdoms, from Georgina’s delicate poppy to swarm-raiding army ants.

Timothy Pond, an illustrator based at the Zoological Society of London and member of the judging panel, commented “The quality of the illustration and drawing techniques is outstanding. Visualisation skills are exceptionally high amongst all the candidates.”

Georgina said “I have a passion for both art and science, taking both for A-level. In the past, I had never seen anything that combined both of these subjects into one, so when the Nancy Rothwell competition was recommended to me by Mrs Harvey and Mrs Johnson, I thought I might enter as it incorporated both and I have really enjoyed illustration in the past.”

“I found it quite difficult to pick what to draw and looked at many specimens in the biology labs. However, after seeing past entries, I wanted to draw a progression of something and so decided on the growth stages of Papaver somniferum.”

“When the results came out I was quite surprised that I had won an award, but I was really glad that I had taken the time to enter in the summer term. When I attended the experience day and award evening, I loved visiting the RVC (Royal Veterinary College) and I found that I felt really inspired by everyone’s passion for art and science. I hope that in the future I will still be able to continue doing these subjects and combine both of my passions.”
