Art for Research Reading

30 January 2020

Students from both the Junior and Senior Schools are taking part in the charity ‘Art for Research Reading’ competition and exhibition. The charity raises funds for Cancer Research UK’s Children and Young People campaign which helps children suffering with cancer.

In their art clubs the students have created artwork around this year’s theme of ‘My Reading’. Their artwork has been submitted for an expert panel to review and choose a selection of the entries for the final exhibition, which is being held at the University of Reading on 20 and 21 March 2020.

The Junior School students focused on their relationship with Reading as a town. For many this meant their journey to and from school. Roads and traffic quickly become a theme, and in some cases, it was the transition between open countryside and urban environment that stood out. The girls used a combination of paint sticks and acrylic pens to allow for bold block colours and layering of detail, and took the opportunity to experiment before arriving at their final designs.

Students at the Senior School considered their own experiences of Reading. For UIII, their journey to and from school dominated, with the addition of famous landmarks in the town. For LIV it was The Abbey School itself. Whilst UIII collected images of their journey and the landmarks, LIV took photos from around the School, and these were used to build their montages. Carbon paper was used to transfer the images, and again the girls trialled different methods of adding colour and tone. Final designs used watercolour, fineliners and coloured pencils.

Well done and thank you to all the students who took part. Here are a couple of examples of the artwork produced.
