Junior School Music Captains

Music has always been a huge part of life at The Abbey, but these strange times have necessitated changes in how we include it in our day.

Until recently we haven’t been able to sing in music lessons or assemblies, so the teachers have had to be creative. Instead, we have learned to ‘sing’ in sign language, and hum in assembly.

Even though we can’t sing together, the Junior School Chamber Choir and Somerleaze Singers have taken place online, in a Google classroom. We sing independently whilst listening to music on headphones, filming ourselves and then Mrs Adams merges our videos to make us into the Virtual Abbey choir.

There are still many clubs that students of all year clubs can join at lunchtime. These include Belleplates, Percussion, Ukulele and Bells and Boomwhackers! One positive thing we have noticed is that all the windows and doors in the school have to open at all times for ventilation, so we hear much more music around the school, especially the individual music lessons! We are really enjoying hearing them.

Mrs Adams and Mrs Heard are ensuring that we all still have opportunities to share our love of music with our peers. We are starting two new initiatives next week; Musical Moments in the Morning, and Studio Sounds. Students who wish to take part in Musical Moments must prepare a piece of music to a high standard and then sign up ready to perform to their year group. This is an opportunity open to all students, whether in school or at home.

Students will be invited to participate in Studio Sounds which will ensure a varied mix of instruments and ages. The performances will be recorded and then combined to create a virtual orchestra for us all to enjoy.

As Music Captains, we want to encourage every student in the school to participate in musical activities, and make sure everyone has an opportunity to find something they love.
