Welcome to the Upper School at The Abbey School.
Our aim is to ensure that each girl is known as an individual and receives the academic and pastoral support that she needs to feel confident and achieve her potential. The Upper School pastoral team works closely with parents and students to promote each girl’s wellbeing. Your daughter’s form tutor will get to know her very well and will work closely with her Head of Year. Our School Nurse and Sixth Form Pastoral Prefects also provide invaluable sources of care and support.
The Upper IV (Year 9) is a time to further develop good study skills and a time to make the right subject choices for the future through studying a wide-ranging and stimulating curriculum. Girls are encouraged to begin to take a more independent approach to their learning and to develop a balanced approach to life. The Sell for Success Business Day, Go For It programme and the many and varied educational visits are particular highlights of the Upper IV year.
During the Lower V and Upper V years the girls follow their chosen GCSE courses. Specialist subject teachers deliver an engaging curriculum throughout which your daughter will be fully supported in order to fulfil her academic potential. Philosophy of Religion GCSE is taken in Lower V and enables the girls to gain valuable experience before taking their remaining examinations at the end of Upper V. The in-school Aspire events, careers advice and Morrisby profiling inform the girls as they start to look ahead to making choices for IB or A Level and beyond. Heads of Year work closely with the Sixth Form team and Liaison Prefects through The Way Ahead and Next Steps programmes to provide guidance and to enable a smooth transition post-GCSE.
Girls in Lower V can start their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award which gives them an excellent opportunity to discover a new activity, develop their skills, do some voluntary work and then complete it with an expedition in June of their Upper V year. Opportunities abound for involvement in extra-curricular activities at The Abbey: there really is something for everyone and the girls are encouraged to take advantage of the wide variety of educational and enrichment opportunities available.
We look forward to getting to know your daughter when she joins the Upper School.
