Our aim is to ensure that each girl is known as an individual and receives the support that she needs to feel confident and achieve her potential. As a member of the Lower School community, your daughter will be well supported in her transition to Senior School and encouraged to take advantage of the wide variety of educational and enrichment opportunities available.
All girls in Upper III study the main subjects with specialist teachers: English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, History, Philosophy of Religion, French, Latin, Art, Computer Science, Drama, Home Economics, Textiles and PE. They are mainly taught in their form groups. In Lower IV, the girls also study an additional language, choosing between Spanish or German. The emphasis in Lower School is to nurture an inquiring approach to learning and enable the girls to develop a strong work ethic. Information on the variety of educational trips that help to inspire the girls is provided in the Academic section of our website.
Girls also take part in a weekly Skills for Life session with their form tutor covering topics ranging from emotional well-being, relationships and study skills. Lower School students also work together to fundraise, for example, Hats for the Homeless and The Abbey School Microloan competition.
To enable girls to broaden their experiences and make friends, teachers and sixth formers run a wide range of House activities and clubs; from sport to drama, cookery to musical ensembles, there are opportunities for everyone to find ways to take part and have fun! A few weeks into the Autumn Term, a fun Upper III Bonding Day provides a unique way for the girls to mix between forms and build new relationships. Outdoor residential trips in the summer term for both Upper III and Lower IV also encourage the girls to make new friends, whilst providing a variety of thrilling physical challenges.
The Lower School pastoral team works closely with parents and students to promote each girl’s wellbeing. Your daughter’s form tutor will get to know her very well and work closely with their Head of Year. Our School Nurse and Sixth Form Pastoral Prefects also provide invaluable sources of care and support.
We look forward to getting to know your daughter when she joins Lower School.
