On Wednesday evening we were pleased to be given the opportunity to attend a talk held by Sam Bramwell of Microsoft and Venus Awards’ winner of Manager of the year 2017. After being greeted with plenty of tea and biscuits; we can both say that we found the talk extremely enjoyable as well as informative, Sam particularly went into detail about the struggles she’s faced being a woman in business over the years and how she has managed to raise 2 children as well as reach a successful and very respectful point in her career which was inspiring in itself. We found her emphasis on the importance of having a ‘growth mind-set’ over a ‘fixed mind-set’ particularly intriguing, as we feel the importance of attitudes in the modern day work place can be applied for whichever path we choose. Sam mentioned that a more positive approach to feedback would prove beneficial as we are often drawn to pay close attention to the negative aspects of feedback and more generally, ourselves. Sam also recommended taking a free online test to determine our key character strengths and encouraged us to move away from a focus on our weaknesses in order to accommodate a ‘growth mind-set’ which we’re sure will prove helpful advice. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and feel as though we gained some useful knowledge which will come in handy in the future, we hope to see Sam return soon.
