Nursery girls usually join in the September after their third birthday but there is flexibility to accept applications during the school year if places are available.
Our Stay and Play sessions are a good opportunity for you and your toddler to get to know the Nursery initially. Each term we hold an Open Morning which provides a relaxed and informal opportunity for you and your daughter to visit during a 'typical' working day. Current parents will act as your guides and there is plenty of opportunity for you to talk with members of the teaching staff. The Head of the Junior School gives a scheduled talk to explain The Abbey Junior School's ethos, curriculum and many enrichment activities. The morning provides a valuable insight into the Nursery School and will give you a very good appreciation of the lively atmosphere.
In addition you are encouraged to make an appointment to visit individually at any point in the school year. Please contact Admissions via email@example.com or 0118 987 2256.
To have your daughter considered for entry to the School, please complete our on-line registration form and pay the non-refundable fee. It is advisable, though not essential, to have registered by the end of October to be eligible for a place the following September. Once you are registered we will keep you up-dated with news and invite your daughter for assessment at the appropriate time. We request that you ensure that you have visited the Nursery and School (see above) before arranging an assessment session for your daughter. We advise that you do not alter your current nursery/child care arrangements until your daughter has a confirmed place.
The assessment process for Nursery is fairly informal and consists of a play session and one-to-one focused activity with a teacher. Our Admissions team will arrange a convenient day/time with you.
Once you receive the offer of a place you will need to send back the Form of Acceptance and a £1000 deposit (£500 of this is kept for the duration of your daughter's time at The Abbey, and £500 is deducted from the first term's fee invoice). We will then be in touch with details about familiarisation events for both you and your daughter and information to help you prepare for her first day at Nursery. Girls who are starting in September will be invited for ‘Ready Steady’ visits during the summer term to enable them and their parents to feel more familiar with Nursery.
Girls can join the Junior School at any age although Reception and Lower I (Year 3) are the most common points of entry. Girls can only join Lower III (Year 6) under exceptional circumstances – please do speak to Admissions if this is the case. The assessments for the Junior School take place throughout the year and we can advise on the most suitable time for your daughter to visit.
For entry into Reception, Preparatory (Year 1) or Transition (Year 2) girls spend approximately a couple of hours at school during which time they spend time with their peer group in lessons and undertake 1:1 assessment activities with a teacher. For entry into older years, girls visit for a short school day during which time they complete more formal written assessments to include English, Mathematics and Reasoning and join their peer group for some lessons.
Please note that all Junior School girls sit the entrance examination for The Abbey Senior School.
